India 5-178 at lunch in tour game

Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara compiled half-centuries as India reached 5-178 at lunch on the final day of their two-day tour game in Adelaide.

Opener Vijay and No.3 Pujara both retired shortly after passing 50 against the Cricket Australia XI at Glenelg Oval.

Tuesday’s morning session ended when Josh Lalor trapped Rohit Sharma lbw for 23.

Sharma, a mainstay of India’s one-day team who has played seven Tests, momentarily lingered at the crease and gave umpire Damien Mealey a look of disbelief before trudging off.

Stand-in skipper Virat Kohli has taken a cautious approach in his unbeaten knock, scoring 36 from 61 balls and treating offspinner Sam Grimwade with much respect.

Grimwade, the youngest player in a developmental side loaded with teenagers, kept it tight and dismissed Ajinkya Rahane for one.

Rahane was out driving, with Ryan Carters snaffling a diving one-handed catch at mid-off.

Grimwade was supposed to be sitting an exam at Melbourne Grammar on Tuesday.

But the 16-year-old was given a pardon to roll the arm over against a Test side renowned for being adept at playing spin.

At lunch Grimwade had figures of 1-27 from 10 overs, including one maiden.

Left-armer Lalor claimed the only other wicket to fall, Shikhar Dhawan out edging for 10 on Monday.

The hosts posted a total of 219 on Monday, with express paceman Varun Aaron snaring 3-72 from 17 overs.

The visitors are playing a pair of two-day matches to prepare for the first Test in Brisbane, with the next starting at Adelaide Oval on Friday.
