Hurricane Hilfenhaus sore but on track

Ben Hilfenhaus’s latest comeback remains on track despite the former Test paceman pulling up sore after his match-winning turn with the bat for the Hobart Hurricanes.

Hilfenhaus smashed 10 runs, including a monstrous six, in the final over of his Big Bash League side’s record run chase to beat the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on Saturday.

The 30-year-old is using the tournament to return from a recurring side injury that is likely to need management throughout the rest of his career.

This time, though, it’s back soreness troubling the Tasmanian after his flight back to Hobart.

Hurricanes coach Damien Wright said Hilfenhaus had not suffered any significant injury playing his first major match in a month.

“It was the travel more than anything, having not bowled a hell of a lot in the lead-up and then the travel home,” Wright told reporters ahead of his side’s New Year’s Day clash with the Melbourne Renegades at Bellerive.

“There’s nothing to worry about.”

The Hurricanes will make a call between the 27-Test veteran and spinner Cameron Boyce at the warm-up on Wednesday.

“We asked a lot of him the other night, to play at the Gabba, and he was probably a little bit underdone,” Wright said.

“He’ll be the first to admit that.

“He’s pulled up a little sore today from training so we’ll keep our eye on him tomorrow.”

If he plays, Hilfenhaus will go head-to-head with another returning former Test paceman, James Pattinson.

After a spate of injuries to fast bowlers, Wright said the national hierarchy was monitoring Hilfenhaus’s progress carefully.

“As we progress towards the end of (the Big Bash) he’ll have to get (his) bowling loads up so he’s raring to go,” he said.

“He’s going to have to play a big part in the rest of the season for Tasmania.”

The Hurricanes named an unchanged squad, while the Renegades made three changes to the side that thrashed the Heat on Monday.

The Hurricanes squad includes Tim Paine (capt), Xavier Doherty, Aiden Blizzard, Travis Birt, Doug Bollinger, Cameron Boyce, Ben Dunk, Evan Gulbis, Ben Hilfenhaus, Ben Laughlin, Shoaib Malik, Owais Shah and Jon Wells.

The Renegades squad is Aaron Finch (capt), Fawad Ahmed, Jos Buttler, Tom Cooper, Matthew Gale, Daniel Harris, Michael Hill, Muttiah Muralitharan, Peter Nevill, Aaron O’Brien, James Pattinson, Nathan Rimmington and Ben Rohrer.
