Hughes takes chance in ODI return

Forced to fight hard for his opportunity, Phil Hughes took it with an impressive half century against South Africa in his highly-anticipated ODI return in Harare.

Originally left out of the squad despite hot form for Australia A, Hughes was also overlooked as Michael Clarke’s replacement for the opening tri-series match against Zimbabwe on Monday.

He might have been wondering what he needed to do to get a game.

However, selectors gave him a chance to show his wares against the Proteas world class attack in tricky conditions on Wednesday, and Hughes rose to the challenge.

The 25-year-old, who has perennially been in and out of Australian Test and ODI sides, will know that this is only one step in a long journey to convince selectors he should be opening the batting at next year’s World Cup.

Falling softly for 51 when he popped one to cover off spinner Imran Tahir, Hughes missed a chance to go on and knock the door down.

With Shane Watson (who Hughes replaced in the squad) and David Warner to come back into the fold, competition for spots at the top of the order of the world’s No.1 ODI team promises to be fierce.

Hughes smashed two double centuries and an unbeaten ton for Australia A over recent months back home, and says he feels as confident as he ever has in his career.

Now he’s back in the international frame for the first time since October 2013, Hughes is desperate to stop the trend of being dropped – and wants to cement his spot with consistent performances.

His 51 from 63 balls, featuring eight fours was a good way to start – as he tamed the likes of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel and got Australia off to a sturdy start against South Africa.
