Hughes scores 202* for AusA in one-dayer

Phillip Hughes smacked an incredible double century in Australia A’s one-day clash with South Africa A in Darwin.

Hughes’s push for a national recall gathered further momentum on Tuesday when he set a new Australian List A record, scoring an unbeaten 202 to better David Warner’s 197 for NSW last year.

The 25-year-old needed a boundary off the final ball to reach 200.

Hughes calmly lifted Hardus Viljoen’s delivery over the mid-wicket fence, powering his side to a total of 4-349 in the quadrangular series match.

Earlier this month Hughes scored an unbeaten century in a first-class match against India A in Brisbane.

The gifted left-hander was dropped during Australia’s 2013 Ashes campaign in England, but scored a mountain of runs in the 2013-14 Sheffield Shield season.

He toured South Africa as a result in February-March, but only as a reserve batsman with Alex Doolan and Shaun Marsh preferred by national selectors.

Hughes’s most recent one-day outing for Australia came against India in November 2013.

HUGHES RECORD-BREAKING KNOCK:

*202 not out from 151 balls at strike rate of 133.77

*Moved from 110 to 202 in the final 10 overs of Australia A’s innings

*Scored 18 off the last over, and 19 off the 48th over

*Hit 18 fours and six sixes.
