Heat not giving up on BBL finals hopes

Their BBL campaign looks all but over this season but Brisbane Heat star batsman Nathan Reardon isn’t giving up on a finals appearance just yet.

The Heat managed only 7-134 batting first against the Perth Scorchers at the WACA Ground on Thursday night, the home team chasing it down for the loss of just two wickets with 25 balls to spare.

Reardon was the lone Brisbane batsman to make an impact with 52 not out from 40 balls.

The loss left the Heat with only one win from five games this campaign meaning they now need to win their remaining three matches and hope for some luck to make the finals.

That challenge begins at home to the Sydney Sixers on Sunday before playing away to the Melbourne Renegades on Tuesday and then heading back to the Gabba against the Hobart Hurricanes on Thursday.

While it remains only an outside chance, Reardon isn’t giving up on the season yet.

“We will always stay positive and it’s not impossible for us from here. If we win our next three, things will still have to go our way and they will have to be quite convincing wins,” Reardon said.

“I don’t think we want to get down in the dumps too much because on Sunday we have to play another game of cricket and be as positive as we can. We have to play with no fear I think and just go out there believing that we can win these last three games quite easily.”

English champion Andrew Flintoff might have summed up the down on confidence Heat on Thursday night when he made just seven with the bat and conceded 18 in his one over bowling, but Reardon believes the whole squad needs some support.

“Fred has been great around the group and I don’t think he is alone, I think we all need a bit of love at the moment. We’re not far away, we are just missing a few moments here and there,” he said.
