Haddin rested from ODIs v South Africa

Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin has been rested from a near full-strength Australia squad to take on South Africa in their pre-World Cup series with the No.1 one-day international ranking at stake.

The selectors said veteran Haddin had been granted a break to freshen up ahead of the home summer Tests beginning in December, giving fellow gloveman Matthew Wade a return to international duty.

They have included a battery of six pace bowlers and no specialist spinners in the 13-man squad for first two games of next month’s five-match home ODI series against the Proteas, with those matches on the pace-friendly WACA pitch in Perth on November 14 and 16.

Allrounder James Faulkner and paceman Mitchell Starc have been released to play in Sheffield Shield while 23-year-old NSW Josh Hazlewood has been called into the national ODI squad after overcoming back injury woes.

Hazlewood, who has played two ODIs for Australia, one each on the 2010 and 2013 tours of England, joins fellow pacemen Mitchell Johnson, Kane Richardson and Nathan Coulter-Nile as well as all-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Shane Watson.

“We are pleased with the batting line-up that we have at our disposal,” said national selectors Rod Marsh.

“It has great balance with the likes of David Warner, Aaron Finch and Shane Watson at the top of the order complemented by players such as Michael Clarke, George Bailey and Steve Smith.

“At this stage the squad is only for the first two matches of the series and balances out player preparation for long and short form cricket as we build into a big summer.”

South Africa claimed the ODI No.1 top ranking from Australia this week.

They begin their month-long Australian tour with three T20 internationals against Australia in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney before the ODI series begins.

Australia: Michael Clarke (capt), George Bailey (v-capt), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Aaron Finch, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Shane Watson.
