Fresh-faced skippers ready for SCG Test

Steve Smith has a fair idea of what to expect from Virat Kohli’s captaincy in the SCG Test: emotion and aggression.

Kohli filled in as caretaker captain for MS Dhoni during the first Test at Adelaide Oval, peeling off two centuries in a stellar performance.

Dhoni regained the reins for Brisbane and Melbourne, but handed them back to Kohli when he retired from Test cricket after the MCG draw.

Australia reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Melbourne, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-Test series.

But firebrand Kohli will be keen to make a mark in his first Test as full-time skipper.

“He (Kohli) did a pretty good job for them (in Adelaide),” Smith said of Kohli’s captaincy.

“He’s quite an emotional character and likes to get involved in a lot of the decisions.

“Hopefully we can close out the series well.”

Kohli, fined for an altercation which came between his twin tons at Adelaide Oval, vowed to continue the side’s aggressive approach.

“A line doesn’t need to be crossed, but we are not here to back down from any sort of confrontation or any battles,” Kohli said.

Kohli admitted Dhoni’s exit came as a shock, adding that he would try to emulate Dhoni’s composure.

“I hope I can be as calm as him but everyone has different styles,” Kohli said.

“I know what skills he has as a captain so I will always try to pick his brains and take advice from him whenever I can.”

Smith led Australia at the Gabba and MCG in the absence of hamstrung captain Michael Clarke, but admitted it would be a different feeling at this home ground.

“It’s going to be a pretty big moment for me. Obviously a home Test and my favourite cricket ground in the world,” he said.

Smith and Kohli agreed it would be an emotional occasion, being the first Test at the venue since Phillip Hughes’ shock death.

Hughes was felled by a bouncer at the SCG during a Sheffield Shield game in November, 2014.
