Faulkner, Dunk back for Tasmania in Shield

James Faulkner is happy to be back on home soil and a part of Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia but he’s not losing sight of national selection.

The all-rounder will return to state duties for the Shield match starting at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Sunday, back from playing Twenty20 for Australia.

And while the national team warmed up for play against South Africa in Perth on Friday, Faulkner wasn’t dwelling on his omission.

“I’m not in Perth, I’m here, that’s all I know,” he said.

“I know I’m coming into the squad after this Shield game, obviously they want me to play some red-ball cricket … I just do as I’m told.”

Faulkner, along with fellow Australian T20 representative Ben Dunk, will be handy additions for the Tigers against the in-form Warriors who are coming off an eight-wicket win over Queensland that followed a seven-wicket win at home against Tasmania to start the season.

But it’s not all bright news for the hosts, with an injury cloud hanging over Ben Hilfenhaus.

A late scratching from the line-up last round due to shoulder problems, the paceman is still in doubt a week later, Tigers coach Dan Marsh said.

“He’s still struggling along, so we’re still giving him every chance to play,” Faulkner said.

“I think he’s probably 50/50, he hasn’t done a lot of bowling, he’s had a lot of treatment.”

The Tigers return to Bellerive following a convincing eight-wicket win over Victoria on Tuesday.
