England claw back v India in first Test

England were 1-131 in reply to India’s first innings of 457 at lunch on Friday’s third day of the first Test at Trent Bridge.

The home side still faced a deficit of 326 runs.

Both Sam Robson and Gary Ballance were 59 not out, with their unbroken second-wicket partnership worth 122 runs.

It was a wicketless opening session for India on day three. Ravindra Jadeja came closest to a dismissal, but Virat Kohli could not take a low edge from Robson at leg slip when he was on 43.

Captain Alastair Cook fell on Thursday, bowled around his legs for five by Mohammed Shami after the ball deflected off the left-handed opener’s thigh pad.

This is the first of a five-Test series.
