Dhoni stays quiet on Test retirement

MS Dhoni joked he’d forgotten his lines when asked for comment about the Indian one-day cricket team’s new uniform.

He also still has absolutely nothing to say about his shock retirement from the Test arena.

The bizarre circumstances surrounding the end of Dhoni’s Test career continued on Thursday at the MCG.

It’s three weeks since Dhoni made his post-match comments as Indian captain after drawing the Boxing Day match at the same ground.

About an hour after that uneventful media conference, Indian authorities dropped the bombshell that he had retired from Test cricket, effective immediately, with one match left in the series.

Thursday’s media launch of the team’s new one-day uniform was his first public appearance and first public comments since that day.

Dhoni, still India’s ODI and T20 captain, stood next to new Test skipper Virat Kohli and six other-team-mates on stage.

The closest Dhoni came to addressing Indian cricket’s giant elephant in the room was when he was asked about his time off since the Boxing Day Test.

“It has been good, a few days off,” he said.

And that was it.

A few prepared comments about the uniform, no questions allowed from the assembled journalists.

As one Indian cricket reporter observed, welcome to their world.

Then the microphone was handed to Kohli, one of the few Indian players to thrive during the 2-0 Test series loss.

“It’s been a very eventful month and a half since we came to Adelaide,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed every day of it.

“It’s been challenging at times, but that’s where international cricket is.

“All the boys have really enjoyed the challenge we got from the Australian team and the public as well.”

Kohli, a well-dressed man, said he liked the new uniform.

“The one thing I stressed for the last couple of years was the fit,” he said.

“I like the shirt looking nice and snug.

“As a sportsman, if you are fit, you should have clothes that look good on you as well.”
