Dan Christian puts WA to the sword

Victorian all-rounder Dan Christian scored a whirlwind century to put the Bushrangers on track for outright victory in their Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia at the WACA Ground.

Christian scored an unbeaten 105 off 99 balls, while Cameron White (91) and Marcus Stoinis (99) also chipped in with big knocks in Victoria’s 3(dec)-341.

It left WA with a daunting victory target of 405, and that mark looked a mile away when in-form opener Cameron Bancroft fell for a second-ball duck.

Michael Klinger (12no) and Tom Beaton (10no) held firm to guide WA to 1-26 at stumps, but the home side still require a further 379 runs from 96 overs if they are to pull off what would be a remarkable victory.

Christian was the hero of the day, bludgeoning WA’s attack for 13 fours and three sixes in the 33-degree heat.

Warriors spinner Ashton Agar bore the brunt of the damage, with the two-Test spinner finishing the innings with 0-105 from 11 overs.

On one occasion Christian smacked Agar into the second tier of the John Inverarity stand, with Michael Hogan taking several minutes to find the ball.

Christian has now scored two centuries and an 89 in the Shield this season.

His 180-run stand with White came off just 172 balls, while Stoinis cracked 16 fours and one six earlier in the innings before falling one run short of his second Shield ton.

During the morning session, WA skipper Adam Voges posted his 20th first-class century, but he was left in a world of pain a few balls later when he was struck in the groin by a searing Chris Tremain delivery.

Voges recovered from the hit, but he was out for 101 next over as WA lost their last five wickets for 41 runs to be all out for 287, handing Victoria a 63-run lead.

Victoria collected 2.83 first-innings bonus points compared to WA’s 1.37, meaning the Bushrangers will leapfrog the Warriors into top spot unless WA manages to pull off an unlikely outright win.
