Crushing Shield win for NSW over Tas

Veteran paceman Doug Bollinger has backed up Peter Nevill’s record double hundred to deliver NSW a crushing Sheffield Shield win over Tasmania.

Bollinger took 5-56 at Bellerive Oval on Tuesday to help extinguish the hosts’ second innings and hand the Blues victory by an innings and 91 runs.

“I feel pretty good for an old bloke,” Bollinger, 33, said of his form after the match.

“The ball is coming out well.”

Tasmania were all out for 213 midway through Tuesday’s second session, with their hopes of a draw quickly fading with the loss of five wickets before lunch.

“We bowled well in partnerships and kept it simple and the wickets came,” Bollinger said of the NSW attack.

Tasmania were on the back foot going into the final day at 1-139.

They posted a first innings total of 272, to which NSW hit back with 9(dec)/576, including a first-class top-score for Nevill of 235 not out.

Tasmania couldn’t find the answer.

Opener Jordan Silk (71) was the first to go on Tuesday, playing a defensive shot at a Bollinger delivery which took a fine edge and was caught behind.

Dominic Michael (0) was Bollinger’s second victim, trapped lbw.

The former Test paceman then really put the screws on, bowling Clive Rose (6), before claiming the scalps of Ben Dunk (29) and Jackson Bird (4).

Spinner Stephen O’Keefe (2-24) accounted for Tigers skipper Alex Doolan (42), out lbw, and then Jonathon Wells (8) who chopped a delivery onto the stumps.

Fellow spinner Nathan Lyon (2-21) also proved valuable, closing down Tasmania with the final wicket of Ben Hilfenhaus (6).

Tigers coach Dan Marsh described the loss as gut wrenching.

“We were completely outplayed,” Marsh told reporters after play.

“For whatever reason we didn’t make enough runs in the first innings again which has been a bit of a common theme for us and (is) really disappointing.”

He said Tasmanian selectors would be forced to look to bring in other batsmen.

“We’ve shown a lot of faith in our batting group but by doing that we expect some return from them and at the moment, if you look through the numbers, things aren’t very pretty.”
