Crowe picks NZ-Sth Africa World Cup final

Former Kiwi skipper Martin Crowe is picking a Black Caps-South Africa final at the cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Crowe, who made his New Zealand debut in 1982 as a 19-year-old, captained the Black Caps for four years, leading them to the semi-finals of the 1992 World Cup where they were beaten by Pakistan.

He was last year diagnosed with double-hit lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood disease. Only five per cent of those diagnosed with it live for longer than 12 months.

Speaking to media at Eden Park on Wednesday, Crowe said the Black Caps’ form over the past year, and playing in familiar conditions at home, gave them an edge.

“I’m picking a South Africa-New Zealand final – that’s my gut feeling,” he said.

“Like any other fan, I’ll be here supporting and I’ll enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the event, and see this side hopefully progress successfully.”

The Black Caps have just completed a 2-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka, winning the second Test in Wellington by 193 runs.

They face a seven-match ODI series against the Sri Lankans before kicking off their World Cup campaign on February 14 in Christchurch.

Crowe said the Blacks Caps were building impressive consistency.

“The number of doubles and triples being scored at the moment is testament to the quality they have,” he said.

“The bowling, their fielding, the coaching staff, the selection … it’s all been very consistent, and it must give every player a lot of faith and encouragement.

“I think they’ve removed any fear, so I expect a fearless side running out here.”

Crowe said he expected 100 overs of total commitment from the Black Caps in every World Cup match and, in captain Brendon McCullum, they had a skipper nearing the peak of his game.

“I think Brendon will be a very good decision-maker – that’s what he’s got to be on the day. And they’ve got to stay grounded from one game to another … but we’ve seen the quality and skill they all possess.”
