Cricketer David Warner in a good place

A Twitter rant against journalists, suspended for taking a swing at England batsman Joe Root in a bar, David Warner had a lot going on in 2013.

And now, having had a baby daughter Ivy Mae with his ironwoman partner Candice Falzon in September, the NSW opener is at the top of his game as a cricketer.

Warner was set to resume on Friday’s third day of play in the first Test against Pakistan in Dubai on 75.

It’s the sixth consecutive Test innings in which Warner has reached 50 and the 27-year-old also notched his fifth century stand with fellow left-hander Rogers in 21 innings together.

“It comes with age and, the more times you go out in the middle, the more you realise what you can do,” Warner said before play on Friday.

“It’s been a great last 12 months.

“There was a lot going through my head 12 months ago and I knew (I had to either) knuckle down or I won’t play again for Australia.

“So I spoke to my parents, I spoke to Candice and we came up with a solution to switch on and focus and get back to what I want to do and that was play cricket for Australia.

“It comes down to maturity. The past 12 months, I’ve realised how hungry I am to score runs and now I’ve found a balance between on the field and off the field when I’m practising.

“So I think all of those lead up to you walking onto the field and being consistent.”

Warner is the No.5-ranked batsman in Test cricket.

His unbeaten 75 on Thursday came off 77 balls with seven fours and one six.

“The way to play cricket on this wicket is to actually take it to the bowlers,” Warner said.

He says his partnership with Rogers, 10 years his senior, has added to his sense of confidence at the crease.

“It’s great fun out there,” Warner said.

“Bucky doesn’t really say much but, when we’re off the field, he says a lot.

“We’re going fantastically as a partnership.”

Warner suffered a groin strain less than two weeks before the first Test and says it’s “very sore”.

He says he doesn’t have to run at high intensity in Test cricket.

“So at the moment, I’m coasting my way through it,” he said.
