Clarke to miss World Cup opener

Michael Clarke has been ruled out of Saturday’s World Cup opener.

Australia coach Darren Lehmann confirmed on Thursday that Clarke would not play against England at the MCG.

Clarke remains on track to return for Australia’s second game, against Bangladesh in Brisbane on February 21.

“He’s pulled up really well and he’s not playing Saturday,” Lehmann said of Clarke.

“We’re really happy with his progress. We’re going to stick with the plan and he’s going to play against Bangladesh.”

Clarke was put through his paces during Wednesday’s warm-up game against the United Arab Emirates, top-scoring with 64 and bowling two overs.

“He’s very keen to play (against England),” Lehmann said.

“We had a chat.

“We’re making sure he’s 100 per cent ready to go for Bangladesh.

“We’re really comfortable with the decision.”
