Burns to make Test debut on Boxing Day

Queensland batsman Joe Burns is poised to make his Test debut at the MCG after being called up to replace injured allrounder Mitch Marsh in Australia’s squad.

Coach Darren Lehmann is hopeful Marsh (hamstring) will be fit for the fourth Test in Sydney, but the selectors will take no risk for the third Test as Australia attempts to clinch a series win in Melbourne.

“That’s the only change. Mitch Marsh will travel with the team to get prepared for the Sydney Test,” Lehmann said on Sunday.

“He (Marsh) is just not 100 per cent with his hamstring … whether it’s a batter, bowler or allrounder – we need to make sure players are 100 per cent.”

Lehmann said Burns was the “best man to fill” Marsh’s spot in the side, praising the 25-year-old’s versatility as a batsman.

Australia are yet to decide where Burns will bat in their order.

Opener David Warner suffered a thumb injury in the second Test, but Lehmann expects he will be fit enough to play in Melbourne.

Veteran paceman Ryan Harris, who missed the second Test due to a quad strain, is expected to tip Mitchell Starc out of the XI that defeated India by four wickets in Brisbane.

Australia’s 13-man Test squad for the Boxing Day Test: David Warner, Chris Rogers, Shane Watson, Steve Smith (capt), Shaun Marsh, Joe Burns, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Ryan Harris, Peter Siddle.
