Burns learns from tough Test debut

Joe Burns says he has learned the lessons from a disappointing Test debut.

Burns didn’t look out of place at last week’s drawn MCG Test, but Australia’s newest batsman could manage only 13 and 9 in his maiden international.

He will get the chance to improve on that in the fourth and final Test against India, starting at the SCG on Tuesday.

“I guess from my point of view in both innings I felt that I was playing well, I felt comfortable right until I got out,” Burns said at training on Sunday.

“So it is a good lesson just to give myself more time and really get myself in before I start trying to play a more expansive game.

“That is probably the biggest difference coming from (Sheffield) Shield cricket to Test match cricket, you don’t really get away with that.

“I’m feeling confident coming into the Sydney Test and hopefully I will be able to turn those good starts into big scores.”

Burns, who averages 41.66 in first class cricket, was an unexpected call up to the Australia side for the MCG Test.

The 25-year-old said he was buoyed by the raucous reception he received from the Melbourne crowd when he walked onto the ground to bat for the first time on Boxing Day.

The Queensland opener can likely book a berth in the Ashes squad to tour England later this year, with a big score at the SCG.

But Burns said he wasn’t concentrating on that.

“It is very exciting the tours that are coming up for Australia, but you can’t get distracted by external things,” he said.

“In cricket you just focus on the next training session, on the next game and make that the most important thing.

“That is one thing I have learnt over the years, you can’t get too far ahead of yourself.

“I’m just enjoying playing for Australia and whatever opportunities come along I’m just trying to contribute to the team’s success as best I can.”
