Bulls rescued after SA paceman hat-trick

South Australian quick Chadd Sayers claimed a hat-trick before two young batsmen rescued Queensland on day one of their Sheffield Shield match.

Sayers became just the 10th South Australian to take a first-class hat-trick as the Bulls, with Nick Stevens making an unbeaten century, posted 4-314 on Friday’s opening day at Adelaide Oval.

The Redbacks’ swing bowler dismissed Joe Burns, debutant Ben McDermott and Peter Forrest in consecutive deliveries in the first session.

But Queensland’s South African-born opening bat Marnus Labuschagne and fourth-gamer Stevens steadied the visitors.

The duo, both aged 20, belied their inexperience with composed knocks: Stevens compiled a stylish 134 not out and Labuschagne made 83 in his debut first-class innings.

Veteran Chris Hartley was unbeaten on 79.

Stevens, who had made three ducks in four previous Shield innings, struck 18 boundaries to reach a deserved maiden first-class century.

And Labuschange, born in Klerksdorp in South Africa’s North West Province but featuring in Queensland under 17 and under 19 sides, appeared set for the same milestone but fell lbw to Redback legspinner Adam Zampa (1-84) when missing an attempted sweep.

The young pair’s feats came after Sayers took his first ever hat-trick – and the first by a South Australian in first-class ranks since 1977.

Sayers (3-40 from 21 overs) bowled Burns (14) with a superb inswinger.

He trapped first-class debutant McDermott, the youngest son of ex-Test great Craig McDermott, lbw with another in-dipper.

Sayers then produced a fine hat-trick delivery which swung in slightly before moving away off the pitch and Forrest, playing defensively, edged to wicketkeeper Tim Ludemann.
