Bulls opener leads resistance against SA

Paceman Chadd Sayers became the first South Australian in almost four decades to claim a hat-trick when routing Queensland’s top order in their Sheffield Shield match.

Sayers took three wickets in consecutive deliveries as the Bulls reached 3-98 at lunch, with opener Marnus Labuschagne not out 66, on Friday’s opening day at Adelaide Oval.

The Redbacks’ swing bowler dismissed Joe Burns, debutant Ben McDermott and Peter Forrest for the first hat-trick by a South Australian in first-class cricket since Andrew Sincock in November 1977.

Sayers produced a superb inswinger to bowl Burns (14) when the score was 27.

Next ball, McDermott, the youngest son of ex-Test great Craig McDermott who was making his first-class debut, was trapped lbw by another in-dipper.

Sayers then produced a fine leg-cutter on the hat-trick delivery which Forrest, playing defensively, edged to wicketkeeper Tim Ludemann.

Sayers, who had figures of 3-19 from 11 overs at lunch, is the 10th South Australian to record the rare feat in first-class matches.
