Bulls name Harris for second Shield match

Returning Test quick Ryan Harris has been retained in Queensland’s side as he asks for a second Sheffield Shield hit-out before the start of Australia’s four-Test series with India.

Harris impressed in his first-class comeback from knee surgery this week, taking match figures of 7-118 and hitting a run-a-ball 50 in the Bulls’ 188-run win over NSW at the Gabba.

But the hard-marking 35-year-old insisted he needed more match practice to cope with the rigours of Test cricket.

Harris is expected to be among five front-line pacemen included in Australia’s extended squad when selectors name their first Test contenders on Monday.

The four-man panel may also give him his wish by allowing him to turn out in Queensland’s clash against Tasmania, starting Tuesday, despite it being played at the less bowler-friendly Allan Border Field.

The Bulls have named Harris in a 13-man squad which also features former Test No.3 Usman Khawaja who is set to make his return from a broken finger this weekend.

Khawaja will test his right-hand injury in Brisbane grade cricket

The left-hander hasn’t played since dominating the interstate one day cup competition last month, smacking 532 runs at a strike rate of 99 and an average of 74.

Bulls coach Stuart Law is optimistic Khawaja, sorely missed in the opening three Shield matches, would return against Tasmania.

“He’s been back with us at training and going okay, so hopefully he can test himself out in grade cricket and be right to go next week,” Law said.

Queensland squad: James Hopes (capt), Usman Khawaja, Joe Burns, Marnus Labuschagne, Greg Moller, Peter Forrest, Nathan Reardon, Chris Hartley, Ben Cutting, Ryan Harris, Cameron Boyce, Luke Feldman, Peter George.
