Boof made me the player I am: Joe Burns

Joe Burns wouldn’t be at the MCG on Boxing Day if not for Darren Lehmann.

That’s true because Australian coach Lehmann is on the selection panel that ushered Burns into the Test XI at the expense of injured allrounder Mitch Marsh.

But it’s also the case because of the profound impact Lehmann had on Burns in the formative years of his cricket career.

“I was a young player when he took over (as coach of Queensland) and he taught me everything that goes with professional cricket,” Burns said.

“The values, the type of character, the way to go about the game on and off the field.

“I’m just excited to have him as my first Australian coach.”

Burns noted Lehmann’s guidance extended far beyond technique tweaks or tactical nous.

“I certainly am the player I am today and I guess the person around cricket I am today because of the influence he had on me from a younger age,” Burns said.

“The way that he coached in Queensland is the same as the way he coaches for Australia … it makes it a very easy transition.

“I learnt so much off Boof. Hopefully the learning continues.”

Burns grabbed his spot in the Test XI by scoring 439 Sheffield Shield runs at 54.87 this season, including 183 against NSW at the Gabba last month.

However he is no stranger to performing at the MCG, with a first-class average of 84.33 at the venue.

“I certainly do enjoy batting here. It’s a wicket that can be quite flat, but also retain its pace,” Burns said.

“Obviously there is going to be more pressure (in a Test compared to a Shield game), but hopefully that makes it more enjoyable.”

Burns has been doing his best to keep a low profile since joining the Australian squad on Monday.

But there has been the odd awkward moment for the 25-year-old, who will be given the ritual baptism at short leg.

“I’ve been asking guys like Brad Haddin and Ryan Harris about where to sit, what to do. Just trying to keep off everyone’s toes and make sure I’m on the best behaviour,” Burns said.

“I got very nervous and stood in the middle of the room until everyone else sat down and found a seat. Then I was informed that I was in Michael Clarke’s seat.”
