Best bowling for Ahmed as WA reach 421

Victorian spinner Fawad Ahmed has posted his best first-class bowling figures as Western Australia ended their first innings on a sure-footed 421 in the Sheffield Shield final.

The legspinner took 8-89 from 40 overs at Bellerive Oval, beating his previous record of 6-68.

For WA, skipper Adam Voges spearheaded his team’s total, contributing 107 before his dismissal on Sunday.

It is his sixth century for the season as he knocks on the selectors door for Australia’s Test squad.

After reaching his ton on day one, Voges said the aim for WA was to post a 400-plus score in their first innings.

It was mission accomplished thanks to his own work with the bat, and support from Marcus Harris (81) and Sam Whiteman (72).

Disappointment came for WA with the cheap dismissal of fellow Test hopeful Shaun Marsh (six).

Marsh was caught behind on Saturday, one of the early scalps for Ahmed who was clearly the pick from among Victoria’s lengthy bowling attack, and must also be raising interest among selectors.

But it was paceman Peter Siddle (2-67) who claimed the breakthrough wicket of Voges during Sunday’s morning session, with a full-pitched delivery sneaking through to rattle the stumps.

Openers Harris and Cameron Bancroft (55) set up the innings with a 130-run partnership, which was broken when the latter was dismissed, the first in a trio of wickets for 33 runs.

Voges then steadied the ship, reaching his 50 from 75 deliveries and a century from 128 balls.

Batting at No.7, Ashton Agar (44 not out) made a handy deposit, but struggled to find support as the tail fell for single figures.

Chris Rogers and Rob Quiney are due to open for Victoria.
