Bell tolls as England seal ODI win

Man of the match Steven Finn and Ian Bell have steered England to a commanding nine-wicket one-day bonus point win over India at the `Gabba on Tuesday night.

In reply to India’s paltry 153, England cruised to 1-156 with 22.3 overs to spare with Bell unbeaten on 88, off 91 balls.

The opener shared an unbroken 131-run second-wicket stand with James Taylor (56 not out).

Earlier, Finn (5-33) ripped through India to snare his maiden five-wicket ODI haul.

He was ably assisted by James Anderson (4-18) who revelled in his return from injury, replacing Chris Jordan (illness).

Anderson sat out the warm-up game against a Prime Minister’s XI and also missed last Friday’s tri-series three-wicket defeat to Australia in Sydney due to a niggling knee injury.

But Anderson needed just seven deliveries to seal his first scalp on his return before wrapping up the innings with three wickets in eight balls.

When Anderson bowled tailender Bhuvneshwar Kumar for five, he notched wicket No.38 against India – a new record in India-England one-day clashes.

Next ball he had Mohammed Shami caught slogging to close the innings.

Finn was even more devastating with the ball.

He was on a hat-trick as India lost 4-10 then 3-6 after winning the toss.

India never got off the ground after opting to bat.

They did not hit their first boundary until the seventh over and only hit seven overall for the entire innings.

All-rounder Stuart Binny – replacing Ravi Ashwin – top scored with 44 while captain MS Dhoni (34) and opener Ajinkya Rahane (33) also got starts.

India were on the back foot from the outset after losing Rohit Sharma to a hamstring complaint ahead of the match.

England next play Australia in Hobart on Friday.
