Australia to bat first in World Cup opener

Australia will bat first in Saturday’s World Cup clash after England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss at the MCG.

Australia captain George Bailey was pleasantly surprised by his counterpart’s decision.

“We were looking to bat, so very happy. Looks a great wicket, will be for the entire game and hopefully we do well,” Bailey said.

As expected, Josh Hazlewood edged out Pat Cummins to claim the final spot in Australia’s XI.

Cummins, Xavier Doherty, Michael Clarke (hamstring) and James Faulkner (side strain) are the men missing out from Australia’s 15-man squad.

“A tough decision,” Bailey said of picking Hazlewood ahead of Cummins.

Australia have won 13 of their past 15 one-day internationals against England in Australia, including last week’s tri-series final in Perth.

England selectors dropped allrounder Ravi Bopara, with Gary Ballance to bat at first drop for the visitors.

“We’ve gone for the extra batter today,” Morgan said.

Australia XI: David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Steve Smith, George Bailey (capt), Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Marsh, Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood

England XI: Moeen Ali, Ian Bell, Gary Ballance, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (capt), James Taylor, Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Stuart Broad, Steven Finn, James Anderson.
