Australia collapse against Pakistan

The Abu Dhabi pitch looked like your standard Hume Highway road when Pakistan batted on it but Australia have managed to collapse to 5-120 when their turn finally came.

In reply to Pakistan’s first innings of 6-570 declared in the second Test, Australia resumed on Saturday’s third day of play on 1-22 and lost four wickets before lunch.

The follow-on mark of 371 now looks a bit like a mirage in the Arabian desert for Michael Clarke’s side.

Clarke is unbeaten on 34 and Mitchell Marsh is on eight, as doubt surrounds Brad Haddin’s ability to bat following Friday’s shoulder injury.

David Warner departed for 19 at 2-34 after offering an easy catch to point off the bowling of paceman Rahat Ali.

Twenty20 sensation Glenn Maxwell played an attacking innings of 37 off 28 balls. The aggressive Maxwell was bowled by spinner Zulfiqar Babar after missing an attempted loft over mid-on.

Rahat also rattled the off stump of nightwatchman Nathan Lyon (15) and Zulfiqar removed the in-form Steve Smith lbw for a duck after Pakistan called for a video review.

Haddin left the field on Friday after diving for an attempted catch and returned twice to resume the wicketkeeping duties despite a sore right shoulder.

“We believe Brad has injured his AC joint after falling on it,” team doctor Peter Brukner said on Friday night.

“He will have treatment overnight and we are confident he will be able to bat.”

The 37-year-old Haddin’s 59-Test career could be under threat if a serious injury is confirmed by scans.

“I haven’t gone for a scan. Scans only rule you out, not in,” the courageous ‘keeper said.

Pakistan lead the two-match series one-nil. Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq is moving closer to becoming the first man to lead Pakistan to a Test-series win over Australia since 1994.
