Aust restrict Pakistan to 9-96

Legpsinner Cameron Boyce has claimed 2-10 off four overs in a spectacular debut as Australia restricted Pakistan to 9-96 in their Twenty20 clash in Dubai.

Glenn Maxwell led the way on Sunday with 3-13 off three overs for Australia, who had named four first-timers in their side.

Debutants Kane Richardson (1-13) and Sean Abbott (1-17) were also stand-out performers for Australia.

Pakistan chose to bat first and Maxwell opened the bowling.

The offspinner struck twice in the third over, removing Awais Zia caught at mid-off and Umar Amin, who was stumped.

Maxwell found some sharp turn to bowl Sohaib Maqsood at 3-23 in the fifth over.

The 25-year-old Queenslander Boyce also gave the ball a rip and claimed a wicket with his fourth delivery when Ahmed Shahzad was caught at slip at 4-33.

With his team in trouble at 4-36, Umar Akman aimed a risky slog down the ground and was caught at mid-off for one as Richardson also took a wicket in his first over.

Abbott took a major scalp in his first over on debut, removing Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi lbw for three.

Boyce picked up his second wicket when Anwar Ali holed out to mid-on and Mitchell Starc bowled Saad Nasim, who hit 25 on debut.

James Faulkner removed Wahab Riaz (19) in the 19th over.

Pakistan’s second top-scorer was their extras column, which yielded 20 runs comprised of seven leg-byes and 13 wides.

However, the pitch was clearly assisting the spinners and could be a challenge for Australia’s batsmen.

Australia handed T20 International debuts to Boyce, Richardson, Abbott and top-order batsman Phil Hughes.

Chief selector Rod Marsh presented the four players with their yellow caps as the team completed their warm-ups on the field.

Australia’s squad has been weakened by the absences of Pat Cummins and Mitch Marsh.

Pace bowler Cummins took part in Saturday’s Champions League final in India while allrounder Marsh broke down with a hamstring injury last week while playing in the same tournament.

Pakistan’s strike bowler Saeed Ajmal, has been ruled out of the T20 clash because of a chucking ban while fellow spinner Mohammad Hafeez is also absent after injuring his hand at training.
