Aust power to strong win over Pakistan

Pakistan’s batsmen have crumbled to 162 all out as Australia scored a crushing 93-run in their opening one-day clash in Sharjah.

Steve Smith scored 101, his maiden ODI hundred, in Australia’s 8-255 on Tuesday.

Pakistan lasted only 36.3 overs as paceman Mitchell Johnson took 3-24 while spinners Glenn Maxwell and Nathan Lyon claimed two wickets each.

The home side progressed comfortably to 1-59 off 12 overs before Lyon (2-33) claimed two wickets in two deliveries.

Sarfraz Ahmed (34) was caught by a diving Brad Haddin behind the stumps and captain Misbah-ul-Haq fell for a golden duck as David Warner snapped up a brilliant catch at leg slip.

Johnson claimed his second wicket when Asad Shafiq (13) was caught down legside at 4-63.

Warner produced a second diving catch, this time at gully, to remove Fawad Alam (7) at 5-90.

Crowd favourite Shahid Afridi came and went for five, holing out to deep square leg as debutant Sean Abbott took his first ODI scalp.

Cheered to the crease, Afridi was booed off the ground.

Anwar Ali (7) was caught behind off Johnson before Wahab Riaz fell to a diving return catch from Maxwell (2-29).

Under-fire No.6 Umar Akmal, who batted poorly in Sunday’s T20 defeat, hit six boundaries in his 46 before being bowled by Kane Richardson at 9-137.

Paceman James Faulkner’s 0-20 off two overs was the only possible concern for Australia’s camp in their bowling innings.

Earlier, 25-year-old Smith had come to the crease after Aaron Finch’s dismissal from the first ball of the series.

Smith’s superb knock came off 118 balls in stifling heat, with temperatures in the high 30s in Sharjah.

Warner (43) and Smith added 86 for Australia’s second wicket before Warner became one of legspinner Afridi’s three victims.

Skipper George Bailey (18), Maxwell (21), James Faulkner (11) all got starts in the middle order, before Brad Haddin (23 not out) and Johnson (21) scored handy runs late in the innings.

Afridi (3-46) made the key breakthrough to remove an exhausted Smith caught at long off at 6-216.

The three-match series continues with game two in Dubai on Friday.

Australia have added left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty to their squad for the final two games in place of allrounder Mitchell Marsh, who has a hamstring injury.
