Aussies, NZ set for World Cup final

It’s been a World Cup where bat has dominated ball and Sunday’s final looks to be shaping up as another run-fest.

Australia and New Zealand will battle it out on an MCG pitch that looks to be an absolute belter, with no threat of rain according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Given it’s been hard to attain swing in recent ODIs at the Melbourne venue, the expectation is it could be a hard slog for bowlers.

“The pitch looks fantastic,” Michael Clarke said in his pre-match press conference.

“The outfield is in amazing condition … we’re in for a great game.”

Clarke, who will be playing his 245th and final ODI, and Brendon McCullum will stroll out for the toss with a crowd of almost 100,000 cheering them on.

Batting first would presumably be the preference of both, although neither man was willing to say as much on Saturday.

“We’ll wait to see what the overhead conditions present us with,” McCullum said.

“The pitch looks good and the outfield is outstanding, fast.

“We’ve won games batting first, we’ve won games chasing.

“For us, it’s more about the belief rather than an absolute necessity to bat or bowl first.”

McCullum confirmed the Blackcaps would field an unchanged XI for the title decider, having pipped South Africa in a thrilling semi-final at Eden Park.

Australia thumped India by 95 runs in their semi and also expect to name an unchanged team.

“(Selectors) Rod Marsh and Boof (Darren Lehmann) will have another look at the wicket, and then we’ll announce the team at the toss,” Clarke said.

Clarke and McCullum had a short but lively chat at a photo opportunity alongside the trophy on Saturday.

“It was more about wishing each other all the best,” Clarke said.

“I have a great relationship with Brendon.

“I’ll always be grateful for the way him and his team respected the Hughes tragedy and respected Phillip’s family, so that’s probably brought us closer together.”

The Blackcaps abandoned the second day’s play in their Sharjah Test against Pakistan as a mark of respect following Hughes’ shock death.
