Aussie cricketers want revenge v India

Australia were humiliated in their most recent Test series against India, with Shane Watson keen to repay the favour.

Watson and Mitchell Johnson were among four players suspended during the 4-0 loss in 2013, with the allrounder returning home after being at the centre ‘homeworkgate’ incident.

Darren Lehmann noted on Friday it was too early to know whether Australia’s standard aggression would be on show in the first Test against India.

The pain of Phillip Hughes’ desperately unlucky death being so raw, coach Lehmann said it was a case of “time will tell”.

But Watson made it clear on Sunday that Australia would be just as aggressive with bat and ball in the upcoming four-Test series as they were in a 5-0 Ashes thumping.

“That’s not going to change because that’s when we’re at our absolute best,” he said.

“They hammered us in their conditions so we have a lot to give back to them in our conditions.

“They certainly let us know that they were on top of us in that series.

“We need to make sure they feel a similar pain as we did over in India.”

Selectors Rod Marsh, Trevor Hohns, Mark Waugh and Lehmann would have liked what they saw on Sunday, as captain Michael Clarke continued to bat freely and field with vigour.

Clarke has seemingly recovered from a recurring left hamstring injury and is poised to take the field at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday.

Clarke delivered an emotional tribute at Phillip Hughes’ funeral, with the entire Test squad desperate for him to be on the park this week.

Lehmann, speaking on Friday when Clarke was still in Sydney, replied succinctly when asked what the 33-year-old needed to prove on the weekend to show he’s ready for the first Test.

“As long as he is fine, he can do the running and bat at the level he needs to – we’ll be fine,” Lehmann said.

Clarke has certainly done that, moving briskly at the crease and taking part in fielding drills on Saturday and Sunday.

Shadow batsman Shaun Marsh remains in Adelaide, but it appears increasingly unlikely the Marsh brothers will play their first Test together.

The concern was how Clarke would back up after batting in the morning and afternoon on Saturday, but he looked composed and pain-free the following day.
