Aussie-born Robson boosts England Test bid

Australia-born Sam Robson has pressed his England Test claims with an unbeaten 144, as Middlesex took control of their County Championship match against Nottinghamshire.

Robson racked up 19 fours in his 278-ball innings as he spent nearly six hours at the Lord’s crease on the second day of action.

Fellow England hopeful Steven Finn did his international chances no harm when he removed Andy Carter in the fourth over of the day and ended the innings with figures of five for 91.

Eoin Morgan also posted 86 in a 203-run stand with Robson as the Middlesex trio gave the international selectors a nudge ahead of the summer Tests against India and Sri Lanka.

The hosts closed on 296 for four, trailing by 30, in response to Nottinghamshire’s 326.

Former Australia Under-19s opener Robson has been tipped for a full England Test call-up this summer after qualifying through residency.

The 24-year-old has worked his way through the Middlesex ranks after swapping Sydney for London when leaving school.

Robson fired five centuries in winter tours to Australia with the England Performance Programme and Sri Lanka with England Lions.

After a disastrous County Championship opener against Sussex, Robson has quickly hit back to century-making form, with Morgan posting his first meaningful score of the season to boot.

Middlesex slumped to defeat by an innings and 127 runs at Sussex to start their season in shambolic fashion.

Now Robson and Morgan have handed Angus Fraser’s side the platform to bounce back at the first opportunity.
