Andrew Flintoff opens up about depression

Former English cricket captain Andrew Flintoff says he still sees a doctor to keep his depression in check.

Flintoff opened up about his battle with depression to his fellow personalities on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!

He said alcohol played a role in dragging him down and his life has changed for the better since giving up the booze.

“I genuinely thought I had, had enough of it (alcohol) and it catches up with you in the morning and two, I suffer from depression and it doesn’t help at all,” Flintoff said.

“You just hit rock bottom afterwards. Life is so much easier with not having any.

“It’s like the things that tend to go wrong are drink fuelled.”

His open and frank discussion about his private and personal battle with depression drew praise on Twitter.

“Bravo to #ImACelebrityAU for talking so openly about depression, diagnosis and life with a mental illness,” wrote Jessica Morris.

Another person tweeted “Great conversation about mental health. It was nice of Freddie to open up like that.”

Flintoff said he only realised he needed professional help to deal with his darkest thoughts after interviewing sports stars about depression.

Once they opened up about their problems and depression, Flintoff identified with his own worrying thoughts.

“I never knew what it was and speaking to other people I identified how I felt and I could work it out and treat it,” Flintoff said.

“When you spoke to people they talked about their experiences and how they felt and that’s exactly how I felt or can feel.”

Flintoff said he treats depression like any other illness or sickness and seeks medical help whenever it causes him concern.

“It’s like now when I have bad ear I see a doctor or if I have an injury I see physio.

“When I struggle with my head I see someone.”

During Flintoff’s revelation, Brady Bunch TV star Maureen McCormick said she too had battled depression.

“I suffered for years and years,” McCormick told Flintoff.
