Adam Voges dreaming of Test debut

Veteran batsman Adam Voges admits he’ll probably be battling it out with long-time WA teammates Shaun Marsh and Mitch Marsh for a spot in Australia’s Test XI.

Voges edged out Joe Burns to win a spot in Australia’s 17-man Test squad for upcoming tours to the West Indies and England.

National selector Rod Marsh said “pure weight of runs” pushed Voges into the Test squad after the 35-year-old plundered 1358 runs at an average of 104 during the Sheffield Shield season.

Voges is eager to realise his boyhood dream by earning a Test debut, but he knows it may come at the expense of either Shaun or Mitch Marsh.

“Yeah there’s every chance Shaun and I will be vying for the same spot, or Mitch even as well,” Voges said.

“It will be a bit of friendly banter, and the competition will keep us going.

“We’re all very good friends. If all three of us get picked, that’s the ideal situation. But there’ll be plenty of support if guys miss out.”

Queenslander Burns can count himself unlucky after scoring a pair of half-centuries during his last Test against India in January, but the form of Voges was simply too hard to resist.

Marsh said when watching Voges this season he often thought “I don’t know how anyone’s going to get this bloke out”.

Voges was informed of his Test call-up on Monday morning, but there was a slight delay in getting him the news.

“I missed Rod’s call,” Voges said.

“At 7.30 in the morning and with kids running around, the last thing I’m doing is answering my phone.

“But then I got the voice message saying it’s Rod Marsh and to call him back. So I rang back in about three seconds I reckon.

“He said `well done, you’ve earned your spot. You’ve done really well in the last couple of years, you keep getting better and good luck’. It was a good call to get.”
