Abbott claims first wickets in Shield

NSW paceman Sean Abbott has claimed two wickets in his first match since delivering the bouncer that caused Phillip Hughes’ death in a freak accident.

Queensland were teetering at 6-135 after Abbott and Mitchell Starc both grabbed two wickets as the Bulls lost five wickets for just 27 runs during the second session at the Sheffield Shield match at the SCG.

NSW players crowded around to congratulate and encourage 22-year-old Abbott after he bowled Nathan Reardon for six during his 10th over.

In his next over, he had Ben Cutting (three) caught behind by Peter Nevill.

The wickets came two weeks after the accidental blow suffered by Hughes at the same ground in NSW’s Shield match against SA.

Abbott was warmly applauded by the crowd when he bowled his first over on Tuesday.

He delivered a bouncer with just his fifth ball.

Starc has 2-33 and Abbott 2-36 while Joe Burns was Queensland’s highest scorer with 59 before he was dismissed by Starc.
