Wines out for the AFL season

Ollie Wines’ AFL season is over, with the bullocking Port Adelaide midfielder to undergo shoulder surgery.

Wines was subbed out at quarter-time of last weekend’s win over St Kilda, a result which kept the 12th-placed Power in the finals hunt.

Port’s head of high performance Darren Burgess said the club could have put Wines’ surgery off until the end of the year, but they did not want to take any risks with the star 20-year-old.

“Ollie will have a shoulder reconstruction tonight as it’s the right treatment for him long-term,” Burgess said in a statement.

“He’ll be in a sling for between four and six weeks, and then he’ll begin running and movement after that.

“It’s generally a 12-week process to get him back into contact and normal training.

“I’d expect that he’ll be ready to go for day one of pre-season.”

Wines has played 62 games for the Power after making his debut in the opening round of the 2013 season.
