Wellingham ban could prompt Arizona camp

Collingwood skipper Nick Maxwell says Sharrod Wellingham may be sent to train in Arizona if the midfielder is given an expected hefty suspension by the AFL match review panel.

Wellingham is in strife for a late, high hit on Carlton’s Kade Simpson which left the Blues midfielder with a broken jaw during their clash on Friday night.

The match review panel will rule on the incident on Monday – and Magpies coach Nathan Buckley has already conceded Wellingham is likely to receive a suspension.

If the ban stretches to three or four weeks, Maxwell says the club could opt to send Wellingham to train at a high altitude camp in Arizona in the United States.

The Magpies did that with a group of players in the middle of last season.

Among them was midfielder Dane Swan, who returned in superb late season form and went on to win the Brownlow Medal as the Magpies made the grand final.

“It’s always an option – we’re always looking for another edge,” Maxwell told the Seven Network’s AFL Game Day of the prospect of Wellingham going to Arizona.

“We sent a few guys away last year. It’ll be spoken about, but let’s hope he doesn’t get too many (weeks).”

Wellingham admitted the third quarter incident had affected him during the rest of the match, which the Magpies lost by 23 points.

“For a couple of minutes there it certainly did play on my mind … the (Carlton) boys were letting me know it was a bad thing to have done,” Wellingham said.

“My mind was elsewhere for a little bit, but then you get straight back into the game and worry about what you’ve got to do.”

Simpson faces at least a month on the sidelines with the injury, which could also have a bearing on the length of Wellingham’s suspension.
