Value of AFL win huge for Suns: Ablett

Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett says re-discovering the ability to win AFL matches cannot be understated for the Suns.

Ablett’s men broke a 10-match losing run last weekend with a clinical 40-point win over St Kilda and are now eyeing off back-to-back victories when they welcome Brisbane to Metricon Stadium this Saturday.

The Lions’ round four victory over the Suns was the start of their long losing run and is clearly a defeat that still rankles Gold Coast.

That win is Brisbane’s only victory in a miserable campaign for the Suns’ Queensland rivals.

Ablett says after improved performances against Richmond and Hawthorn in recent weeks, it was vital for the Suns to turn their form into a victory against the Saints.

“The weekend has given us the self-belief that we were probably lacking, that we are good enough to win games of football,” Ablett said.

“The week before against Hawthorn, we spoke after that game and felt that we’d played three good quarters of football.

“Self-belief is a big thing. It really is.

“We believe that we play the right brand of football but we just haven’t been putting it together for four quarters. That’s what we need to do week-in, week-out.”

One of the big talking points out of the round four clash between the Suns and Lions was Steven May’s high shot on Brisbane tall Stef Martin.

That bump cost May a five-match ban and Ablett has emphasised the importance of being hard, but fair, against the Lions.

“That’s something we speak about going into every game. Making sure you take that physicality and do it in the right way, that it’s all within play, it’s not behind play,” he said.

“No doubt it is going to be a physical game but I’m hoping for both sides that it’ll be played in the right way and I know all our boys are really looking forward to the challenge.”
