Undefeated Geelong keeping the lid on

Geelong coach Chris Scott is refusing to get carried away with his side’s upset 19-point win over reigning AFL premiers Hawthorn at the MCG on Monday.

The Cats remain the only undefeated team in the league after rolling the Hawks 15.16 (106) to 12.15 (87), and many pointers suggest they will once again be busy at the business end of the season.

Scott suggested the result meant a lot for his club, given Hawthorn had looked “unbeatable at times” this year.

But he added that after five rounds it was far too early to read too much into the match.

“It’s the start of the marathon isn’t it,” Scott said.

“It means a bit, but it doesn’t mean anywhere near as much as the stuff later in the year.

“We play the long game at footy clubs. Win, lose or draw, you’re focusing on what you need to do.”

For the Cats, that’s yet another top-two showdown – this time against an in-form Port Adelaide on Sunday.

Port coach Ken Hinkley, a former player and assistant coach at Geelong, has already called on his side’s fans fill Adelaide Oval and mike it as hostile environment as possible.

“We’ve got a really good opposition coming up and a six-day break,” said Tom Hawkins, who was best afield against the Hawks with five goals and seven contested marks.

“We win and that’s fantastic for our record .. but we move on. We’ll review the game, see what we did well and didn’t do so well.

“We’ll look at Port Adelaide and respect them just like we do every other side, and try to find ways that we can expose them.”
