Tom Boyd keen to join Bulldogs, GWS say no

AFL club Greater Western Sydney insist Tom Boyd will not be traded “under any circumstances”, despite the 19-year-old requesting a trade to Western Bulldogs.

Boyd was taken with the No.1 pick in last year’s draft and the Bulldogs confirmed they were willing to recruit the hulking full-forward in exchange for disgruntled captain Ryan Griffen.

“The Western Bulldogs have communicated to GWS that we are prepared to achieve this outcome through a direct trade for Ryan Griffen,” the Bulldogs said in a statement.

Gun midfielder Griffen last week requested a trade to the Giants, setting in motion a chain of events that led to coach Brendan McCartney’s resignation.

But GWS rubbished the notion that Boyd could be part of a deal for the Dogs’ two-time club champion.

“We have been clear with them that despite any speculation or interest, Tom Boyd will not be traded under any circumstances,” GWS chief executive David Matthews said.

“With pick four and potentially another high first-round selection we are confident we are in a strong trade position as we enter the week.”

GWS are trying to sort a trade for out-of-contract forward Kristian Jaksch, who is expected to join Carlton.

Boyd, weighing in at 104kg, is exactly the sort of target the Dogs need in their forward line.
