Sydney have suffered another major blow, with star AFL ruckman-forward Kurt Tippett sidelined for an extra two weeks after undergoing hamstring surgery.

Tippett tore a hamstring tendon in his right knee during the Swans’ 42-point loss last weekend to Greater Western Sydney.

The 29-year-old was initially ruled out for up to six weeks but, after consultation with a surgeon, the club decided surgery would ensure the best long-term recovery.

It means Tippett will not return until at least round 21, the third-last match of the regular season, and will have to fight to be fit in time for the finals.

“We wanted to ensure the best possible outcome for Kurt, so our medical team conducted extensive consultation and research on the best way to heal this type of injury,” general manager of football Tom Harley said.

“The decision to operate was made yesterday and Kurt underwent surgery in Melbourne last night to have a procedure on his tendon.

“The surgery was a success and we’re hopeful Kurt will be ready to return in eight weeks.”

Tippett’s absence will leave a gaping hole in the Swans’ ruck this Sunday, when the Swans face Melbourne and their star big man Max Gawn.

Reserve-grade ruckmen Sam Naismith and Toby Nankervis have been named in coach John Longmire’s extended 25-man squad for the clash at the SCG, with one set to partner replacement No.1 ruckman Callum Sinclair.

Defender Jeremy Laidler was withdrawn on Friday with a knee injury.
