Tiger cub Miles earning AFL finals stripes

Emerging Richmond star Anthony Miles says the prospect of him playing finals football is unbelievable after worrying less than a year ago if he would even stay in the AFL.

The 22-year-old midfielder’s fairytale rise continued on Saturday as he contributed 25 touches, including 13 contested possessions, in the Tigers’ three-point away win over Sydney, which secured eighth spot.

Miles was squeezed out of the GWS Giants at the end of last year after playing ten games in two seasons.

He was put on Richmond’s 2014 rookie list and hasn’t missed a trick since earning his Tigers stripes for the first time in round 12, averaging 24 touches a match.

Now he stands to play in a finals match against Port Adelaide next week, something he could not have envisaged less than 12 months ago.

“Not at all. I’ve come from a position where I didn’t think I’d even be on an AFL list,’ Miles told AAP.

“To be potentially playing a final next week is unbelievable.”

Miles was part of a Richmond side that had to dig deep at ANZ Stadium after Sydney briefly hit the front in the third quarter.

The Tigers had scored the first 33 points.

“That’s probably what made the win even more special,” Miles said.

“We knew Sydney are a very proud side and that they would fight back and we just had to weather that storm.

“It’s probably our best win of the year.”

Richmond have now won five successive interstate games.

“I think most of the guys are married so they like to get away,” Tigers’ coach Damien Hardwick said.

“The boys just love playing interstate. There’s no greater win that you can have (than) when interstate.

“Any boss that doesn’t give a Tiger fan Friday off next week is a mug.”
