Swans’ O’Keefe undecided about future

SYDNEY Aug 28 AAP – Dual premiership winner Ryan O’Keefe says he has yet to decide whether he’ll attempt to continue his AFL career next year after accepting he won’t remain with Sydney.

O’Keefe, 33, who established himself as a star as both a half forward and midfielder, will be given the chance to farewell the Swans supporters with a lap of honour at halftime of Saturday’s final round game against Richmond at ANZ Stadium.

Omitted for the season’s first round match with GWS, he got a late reprieve after an injury to Kieren Jack but was dropped after playing the first four games and hasn’t added to his 286 senior matches.

Since his debut in 2000, O’Keefe has played in three grand finals, won the 2012 Norm Smith Medal and also won the club’s best and fairest in 2009 and All-Australian honours in 2006.

He said on Thursday he would wait and see what was available before making a decision about playing on elsewhere next season.

“I haven’t made my mind up yet,” O’Keefe said.

“I’ve just got to look at all the options and then I’ll make a decision.

“That’s just something I want to sit down with my family and see.

“I don’t want to be rushed into a decision.”

He admitted it had been difficult not getting a chance to play in the seniors for most of the season.

“I’m a competitor and I love playing and I’ve played at the highest level for such a long time,” O’Keefe said.

“It has been difficult, but I’ve had great support working with Crouchy, (reserves coach Jared Crouch) and helping mentor the reserves.

Coach John Longmire said it was no stretch to say O’Keefe was one of the most professional players he had coached.

“He’s been incredibly professional, the way he’s works his craft,” Longmire said.
