Swans’ McGlynn confident after AFL return

Ben McGlynn hopes he’s finally over his September injury jinx and is full of confidence about Sydney’s AFL preliminary final.

McGlynn missed playing in the Swans’ 2012 grand final victory after straining his hamstring during their qualifying final win over Adelaide.

More injury woes and suspension cost him crucial game time at the back end of last season, and he was sidelined for Sydney’s semi-final win over Carlton.

The 29-year-old’s rotten luck looked set to continue in 2014, as a calf injury kept him out for the last three matches of the home-and-away season.

But he returned stronger than ever against Fremantle at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, booting three goals and playing an influential role in the Swans’ 24-point qualifying final win.

“I was pretty tired out there in the third quarter but I found my legs,” McGlynn told AAP.

“It was good to be amongst the boys and back out playing.

“I’ve had a good preparation over the last three weeks, even though the calf obviously held me back.

“We gave it one more week just to make sure of it and I had a good, solid week on the track.

“I’m full of confidence in my body now, so I’m looking forward to the prelim.”

McGlynn has had arguably his best season at Sydney since playing a greater role through the midfield.

He’s kicked 22 goals in 17 games in 2014, a tally beaten only by superstar forwards Lance Franklin, Kurt Tippett and Adam Goodes.

With nearly a two-week break before the Swans’ grand final qualifier on September 19, McGlynn is keen to make the most of the time off.

“It will be definitely welcomed and I’m sure the other boys will be looking forward to a break, (especially) the guys who’ve played all year, with big minutes,” he said.

” … But we won’t switch off because we’ve got a big ask in the prelim.”
