Hawthorn utility Matt Spangher is naturally happy to make an AFL grand final.

But Spangher’s even happier that it is against Sydney, the club he played six games for and formed many close bonds at in 2011-12.

“I was lucky enough to end on good terms,” Spangher said of the second of three clubs he has called home.

“It’s nice I get to enjoy it (a grand final) and nice that they’re here as well.”

As Spangher took part in his first grand final parade on Friday, Rhyce Shaw gave a preview of what his former teammate can expect at the MCG on Saturday.

“I thought he’d have his own car! Where’s the Bentley!?” Shaw said, offering up some gentle banter in the middle of the motorcade.

The Hawthorn cult hero expects more of the same in the grand final.

“Of course (there will be some niggle), everyone knows footy is footy and you cross that white line,” he said.

“You play the game then afterwards you’re still mates.”

Spangher, who started his career at West Coast after being taken with the No.34 pick in the 2005 draft, has twice played against old club Sydney.

But the 27-year-old has never taken on good friend Sam Reid.

That will change on Saturday, with Spangher agreeing there is every chance he will line up on Reid.

“At some times I dare say I will be on Sam … it’ll be good fun,” Spangher said.

Reid agreed.

“We still chat, when he comes up to Sydney we like to catch up,” he said.

“I wish him all the best tomorrow, but hopefully we can do the job. I’m sure there will be some good niggle.”

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson on Friday paid tribute to Spangher’s drawn-out path to potential premiership glory.

“Our players are well aware of the journey and the hardship he’s had to endure over a long period of time,” Clarkson said.

“He’s been at West Coast, Sydney and Hawthorn when those sides have won premierships.

“We’re just delighted for him that he gets an opportunity to run out on grand final day.”

Spangher said Clarkson and the Hawks veterans had helped prepare him for the season decider.

“Their advice has been great – just enjoy the week for what it is,” he said.
