Shannon Hurn named Eagles’ AFL skipper

Shannon Hurn has been named West Coast’s new skipper, with the long-kicking defender taking over the role from the retired Darren Glass.

Hurn beat out Scott Selwood, Matt Priddis, Eric Mackenzie and Josh Kennedy for the coveted role.

Glass was captain for 129 games, second only to John Worsfold, who led his team into battle on 138 occasions.

When Glass retired after round 12 last season, Hurn, Priddis, Mackenzie and Kennedy rotated the captaincy.

Coach Adam Simpson said Hurn’s endorsement for the full-time job was overwhelming.

“The players had a vote and it was pretty clear they thought Shannon should get the job,” Simpson said.

“After Glassy retired we were really impressed with the way all of the boys accepted the responsibility of the captaincy.

“One of the key things as captain is that you have to play well and they all did that.

“With JK and Scooter as vice-captains, there is terrific support around Shannon, but everyone on the list has a leadership role to play in one form or another.”

Hurn, 27, said he was honoured to become the club’s 10th captain.

But the 152-game veteran said his playing style would remain the same.

“To be perfectly honest it won’t change me a lot,” Hurn said.

“All of the senior players have looked to provide some direction and blokes like JK, Scooter, Pridda, Eric and Lecca (Mark LeCras) will continue to do that.

“It’s an exciting time for our football and we want to be part of drive towards success.”
