Roos to seek AFL finals advice: Thompson

North Melbourne will lean on the AFL club’s seasoned September specialists as they seek to celebrate a finals win for the first time since 2007.

Most of the Kangaroos will this week have only one game of finals experience to call on, a 96-point thumping dished out by West Coast in 2012.

A handful of the club’s young stars, such as Luke McDonald, will be playing their first final when they enter the MCG on Saturday night to tackle Essendon.

Scott Thompson has played 133 games and was named in last year’s All Australian team.

But the key defender acknowledges finals are a different beast.

“We’ve got a list that hasn’t played too many finals, so it’ll be good to get some experienced people talking about finals to us,” Thompson told AAP.

“That’s probably what we’ll do at the start of the week, just to get a few little hints of what to do and what not to do.”

Coach Brad Scott, who played in three grand finals during the Brisbane Lions’ golden dynasty, is an obvious option.

“He’ll talk us through it,” Thompson said.

“I’m sure we’ll have a session where he’ll go through it and give us some tips about what to expect.”

Suspended veteran Brent Harvey and former St Kilda star Nick Dal Santo, who have played in 18 and 17 finals respectively, are also obvious options for guidance.

“Our coaching staff have played a few finals. Then you’ve got Boomer and Nick,” Thompson said.

“I know I’ll be looking to them and talking to them during the week.”

Thompson noted Scott spent little time discussing the 30-point win over Melbourne during Saturday’s post-match address, preferring to speak about the excitement and opportunity that an elimination final provides.

“Embrace it and the fact it picks up a notch,” Thompson summarised Scott’s words.

Thompson suggested the Kangaroos need to up their pressure to trump the Bombers.

“They (the Demons) got a lot of uncontested ball during the game. We’ll need to cut that out against Essendon,” he said.
