Robinson’s AFL career not over: Walker

Carlton’s Andrew Walker says teammate Mitch Robinson has taken the first step towards rebuilding his relationship with the players and the club after lying about his night out.

Robinson had told the Blues his fractured eye socket was a result of sparring, before it was revealed he had been in the same early-morning brawl as teammate Jeff Garlett.

Garlett came forward on Monday to tell the Blues about his involvement in an incident outside a city bar at 5am on Sunday, which resulted in the arrest of four men.

Details emerged on Friday that Robinson was also there. Robinson, who has been suspended three times during the 2014 AFL season, was fined $5000 which is the maximum available under player rules.

Robinson’s injury means he’s unlikely to play again this season.

Garlett had been set for a recall to the senior side for Saturday’s round-20 game against Gold Coast, but was ruled out by coach Mick Malthouse after the incident last weekend.

Robinson and Garlett are coming out of contract.

Robinson was also involved in an altercation at the Big Day Out music festival in 2013, resulting in him being ordered to perform two months community service and donate $1000 to charity.

“I think he signed his exit paper, Mitchy,” Melbourne great Garry Lyon told Triple M Radio on Saturday.

Walker says there’s still hope.

“He’s been in trouble before and we’ve tried a few different strategies with him,” Walker told Triple M Radio.

“I think he’ll still be at the club. It’s just a really strong warning for him.

“After I heard that he had lied and said he wasn’t there, I said the most important thing now to get the trust of the players and group back is that you come out, you stand in front of everybody and you tell the full story.

“Because if anything else comes out, you’re going to lose the complete trust of the players.

“He got out and apologised and told the whole story and that’s the first step.”

Walker says it’s up to Robinson if he chooses to use the advice he has been given by the leadership group.

“It’s mainly a personal thing that he needs to address,” Walker said.
