Richmond upset Port Adelaide by 20 points

Port Adelaide’s top-four hopes have suffered another body blow following Richmond’s upset win by 20 points at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Richmond led by 13 points at the final change and surged clear with a five-goal final term to win 19.12 (126) to Port’s 16.10 (106).

It was just Richmond’s sixth win from 16 AFL games in 2014. But it was clearly their best as coach Damien Hardwick’s side claimed a top-eight scalp and also notched three consecutive victories.

After winning 10 of their first 11 games, former competition leaders Port now sit on 11-5 after four losses in five matches.

No one celebrated harder for the Tigers than ex-Port defender Troy Chaplin, who kicked his only two goals for the season on Sunday, both in the last quarter.

Sam Lloyd and Jack Riewoldt booted three goals each for Richmond and Anthony Miles, Trent Cotchin and Brandon Ellis were major ball-winners.

Skipper Travis Boak was dominant for Port while Robbie Gray kicked four goals and Coleman Medal leader Jay Schulz was held to two, reaching his half century.

Robbie Gray was assisted off after suffering concussion in a head clash with Richmond’s Dylan Grimes in the final term.

The Tigers were five points ahead at quarter-time and booted seven goals to Port’s five in a free-flowing second term. Richmond led 11.6 (72) to 8.4 (52) at halftime.

Port kicked four consecutive goals after trailing by 32 points just before halftime as the visitors narrowed the gap to nine points early in the third term.

Richmond’s Reece Conca was carried off after being concussed in a clash with Port ruckman Matthew Lobbe.

Port’s four-goal term allowed them to draw within 13 points at three-quarter time, 14.7 (91) to 12.6 (78). However, Richmond continued to show plenty of run, refusing to let go of their chance for a rare major win in a modest season.

Port host Melbourne at Adelaide Oval on July 20 while Richmond’s next game is on July 25 against West Coast in Perth.
