Port told to forget top four spot, for now

Port Adelaide players have been ordered to go crazy against Carlton, but forget their top-four AFL hopes hinge on the result.

Port’s director of coaching Shaun Hart says Power players must approach the Friday night fixture with a manic defensive mindset.

“We need to ramp up our defence, we need to really wind it up, be crazy really in defence to make sure we don’t give them time and space,” Hart told reporters on Thursday.

With two minor rounds remaining, Port enter the Adelaide Oval encounter in fifth spot, one win behind fourth-placed Fremantle – who they play in Perth in the last game before finals.

But Hart said Port’s top four prospects won’t be used for motivation when they host the 13th-placed Blues.

“We can’t focus on it,” he said.

“We have just got to have our focus fairly and squarely on the process that we need to get done … players need a really simple message and sharp focus on the job at hand.

“We can’t afford to give them any look forward until the time comes.”

Port will summon Jackson Trengove (ankle) and Angus Monfries (hip), both late withdrawals from last week’s win in the wet against Gold Coast, while key midfielder Hamish Hartlett has overcome a slight ankle injury suffered against the Suns and will play.

Their inclusions result in Port having all bar three knee reconstruction victims – Jarrad Redden, Brent Renouf and Sam Colquhoun – available for selection.

But Hart remained wary of Carlton, who have beaten certain finalists North Melbourne and lost narrowly to premiership contenders Fremantle, by five points, and Geelong, by six points, in the past month.

“Their midfield is terrific,” Hart said of the Blues.

“If they get first hands on the ball they’re really dangerous.

“They have got a really strong, rebounding half-back line as well, if they get the game on their terms it’s going to be hard to get the ball off them quickly.

“At both ends of the ground, if we’re not switched on to our game plan and play it well, we will be under siege.”
