Port summon O’Shea for AFL final

Backman Cam O’Shea has been summoned for Port Adelaide’s six-strong salute to Richmond gun Dustin Martin in Sunday’s AFL knockout final.

O’Shea replaces Jarman Impey in the sole change to Port’s side for the elimination final against the rampant Tigers.

O’Shea is among six defenders tasked with stopping Richmond ace Martin, says Port coach Ken Hinkley.

“Cam brings lots, his natural game is one of high run and effort and he can play tall and small,” Hinkley told reporters in Friday.

Dangerman Martin has kicked 27 goals for Richmond this season and looms large in Hinkley’s pre-game plotting.

“We have just got to back the defenders in that are down there to cover him when he’s in the forward line,” Hinkley said.

“Those quality players, they clearly cause you concern whichever part of the ground they are in. You have just got to be ready for them.

“I have asked our back six to be ready for the ability of their midfielders to come forward and hit the scoreboard. We have certainly talked about it a lot.”

Hinkley is extremely wary of the Tigers, who travel to Adelaide Oval seeking 10 consecutive victories.

“You don’t win nine in a row unless your whole side is in really good form,” Hinkley said.

“We talk about some individuals. But I’m sure (Richmond coach) Damien (Hardwick) would be talking about the team, not the individuals.

“She’s a 50-50 game … for two hours, it’s going to be pretty close and hot all the way through.

“Elimination finals, they’re not normally blow out games.”

Hinkley acknowledged Port supporter fury at the AFL for not allowing their home strip in the final, but said the anger wasn’t carried by his players.

Port refused to wear their away white jumper and instead will wear the club’s heritage prison bars guernsey.

“We don’t worry about it, to be honest,” Hinkley said.

“Clearly from our point of view, we would have liked to have our black (home) jumper. But we don’t have any problems.

“We understand the AFL control the finals. They tell you were and when and who to play and we’re happy to play.

“The emotional stuff gets built up from the supporter base more than the two competing teams.”
