Preview:

The Power take on the Lions on Saturday, 2.10PM at Adelaide Oval.  Port Adelaide will be big favourites to win this one at home, with the Power currently sitting at a very respectable 5th place on the AFL ladder.  While Port suffered their first loss to the Kangaroos last round, their midfield quality should see them get over the line against a struggling Lions team.

While midfielders Travis Boak, Hamish Hartlett, and Brad Ebert are all playing well at the moment, the Power will have to play without key forwards Angus Monfries and Chad Wingard, who were lost to injury in last week’s game.  The Lions are a long way from the Power on the ladder, currently sitting in 16th ladder position and coming off a QClash loss to the Gold Coast in Round 3.  They are unlikely to have their first win this weekend, even against a depleted Port Adelaide team.

News:

Winless Brisbane are set to lose key defender Daniel Merrett for two AFL matches after he was charged with striking Gold Coast’s David Swallow.

Merrett’s level-four offence is worth a three-game suspension, but he can reduce the penalty by one match with an early plea.

He laid out Swallow in the last-term incident and the match review panel used a Suns medical report when grading the charge.

It was rated as intentional, high contact and medium impact.

After a busy Monday of video reviews, the panel also handed Collingwood youngster Taylor Adams a one-day game for rough conduct against Geelong captain Joel Selwood.

Adams’ bad record means he cannot reduce the penalty with an early plea, meaning he will miss Friday night’s big match against Richmond unless the Magpies successfully go to the tribunal.

Richmond pair Jack Riewoldt and Matt Thomas can accept reprimands for their offences.

Riewoldt was charged with tripping Western Bulldogs midfielder Tom Liberatore, and Thomas received a rough conduct charge for his sling tackle on Ryan Griffen.

West Coast midfielder Luke Shuey can accept a one-game suspension for striking St Kilda’s Tom Curren, putting him out of action for the Saturday night away game against Geelong.

The Eagles risk a two-game ban if they take the case to the tribunal.

Gold Coast are set to lose Brandon Matera and Steven May for Saturday night’s home game against Hawthorn.

Matera was handed a two-match suspension for rough conduct against Brisbane’s Jed Adcock, but that penalty is halved if the Lions accept the charge.

May’s poor record means that even if he takes the early plea, he will have a one-game ban for rough conduct against Dayne Zorko.

In other match review panel findings:

* Greater Western Sydney’s Devon Smith received a one-game suspension for striking Melbourne onballer Bernie Vince and his bad record means he cannot escape with a reprimand.

* Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins, Vince and Port Adelaide ruckman Matthew Lobbe were fined for umpire contact.

* Sydney co-captain Jarrad McVeigh was cleared of his match-day report for rough conduct against Adelaide’s Matthew Jaensch.
